Personal Statement
Dr. Ann T. Sweeney is the Chief of Endocrinology at St Elizabeth’s Medical Center, the Medical Director of the Steward Diabetes Centers and an Associate Professor of Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine. Dr. Sweeney received her Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry from Boston College and Doctor of Medicine from Tufts University School of Medicine. She completed her residency training in Internal Medicine at St Elizabeth’s Medical Center and her fellowship in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at Boston University School of Medicine. Dr. Sweeney is board certified in Internal Medicine as well as Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism. Dr. Sweeney chose Endocrinology because she finds the field intriguing and an ideal combination of science (including biochemistry, physiology and genetics) and medicine and which also encompasses many organ systems. Endocrinology allows her to see a diverse population of patients with a wide spectrum of disease and she enjoys the relationships that she builds with patients as she cares for them over time. Her clinical interests include diabetes mellitus, osteoporosis, adrenal disorders, thyroid disease and pituitary disorders. She has been recognized as a Top Doctor in Boston Magazine, US News and World Report as well as Boston’s Consumer’s Checkbook, and is a Fellow of the American College of Endocrinology. She is a member of the American Diabetes Association, the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, the Endocrine Society, and the Massachusetts Medical Society. Dr. Sweeney has published her academic work in peer-reviewed journals, co-authored several book chapters and has presented her research at national endocrine meetings. Her recent research has focused on diabetes education and improving clinical outcome measures in patients with diabetes. In her free time, Dr. Sweeney enjoys spending time with her husband and children, reading and playing sports such as tennis and skiing.
