Frank Pomposelli, M.D. is Chairman of the Department of Surgery at St. Elizabeth's Medical Center, Director of Surgery for the Steward Healthcare Network and Professor of Surgery at Tufts University School of Medicine. Prior to joining St. Elizabeth's in 2011, Dr. Pomposelli had been a member of the surgical faculty at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) since 1987 where he ultimately became Chief of the Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, Director of their vascular surgery residency program, Surgical Director of the Cardiovascular Institute and rose to the rank of Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Pomposelli received his M.D. from Boston University School of Medicine in 1979. He trained in general surgery at BIDMC from 1979 through 1986, and then completed his vascular training at New York University Medical Center in 1987. He started the endovascular aneurysm program at BIDMC in 2001, and in 2004 he obtained additional advanced endovascular training during a sabbatical at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. A lifelong surgical educator, committed to excellence in surgical care, Dr. Pomposelli has over 30 years of experience in the treatment of all aspects of vascular disease including complex aortic, carotid artery, and lower extremity bypass surgeries, and in endovascular interventions such as carotid stenting, endovascular aneurysm repair and lower extremity arterial interventions. He is perhaps best known for his clinical work and research in arterial insufficiency of the lower extremities in patients with diabetes mellitus. He has performed over 2500 lower extremity bypasses and 1000 lower extremity endovascular interventions. He has also performed over 1500 carotid surgeries and over 1000 aortic surgical procedures. As the author or co-author of 120 publications and 35 book chapters, he has written and lectured extensively about the clinical approach to diabetic foot disease and helped expand the use of distal arterial bypass in diabetic patients with foot ischemia. An avid skier, cyclist and golfer, he lives in Boston with his wife, Ann. They have three grown children and two grandchildren.
